How Many Companies Don Have a Business Continuity Plan
Disaster Recovery ----------- Business Continuity Planning
Reduce your Organization's Risk..
From 75% to 85% companies do not have the DRP/BCP in place and the reason behind this small to mid size organization is likely to ignore a BCP. (Our business size is small, we don't need it, we'll take our IT with us before the disaster occurs, and "We got our daily backup. That's all we need. We'll buy everything new.")
Approximately 70% of all company risks, makes up by System, Hardware malfunctions and human error. Around 80% businesses have data backup systems, but very few have a plan to access that data if and when a disaster occurs….. (When is the last time test a restore process from tape?)
When, suggested to a company that it would be a value-added business step for them to implement a business continuity plan. The response was, "We don't need it, it's useless to implement business continuity plan! We've been in business from last 18 to 20 years and we never had a word disaster." The reason behind this reply is misunderstanding of its value added benefits and business approach, because we don't know when disaster occurs.
BCP Assumption: The small or medium size organization mainly assumed that BCP is only to protect the IT equipments and its Data and not realized the importance of BCP for the organization and thing Data Backups are the answer of All Questions, and gives unjustifiable excuses for not implementing the BCP like:
- It costs too much money to implement.
- Not enough time or resources.
- It will never happen to our company.
- Why bother? We have good data backups.
- We "plan" on implementing one next year.
- Too much difficult task. Etc.
Actually business continuity plan protects organization People, Data, Vital Communications, Assets, Brand & Reputation. It minimizes threat, loss impact and operation downtime.
Why BCP: A business continuity plan is a roadmap for continuing operations under adverse conditions (i.e. interruption from natural or man-made hazards). BCP is working out how to continue operations under adverse conditions such as include local events like building fires, theft, and vandalism, regional incidents like earthquakes and floods, and national incidents like pandemic illnesses. In fact, any event that could impact operations should be considered, such as supply chain interruption, loss of or damage to critical infrastructure (major machinery or computing/network resource). As such, risk management must be incorporated as part of BCP.
Organization business needs to be protected. It is critical that we are prepared and have good business continuity plans in place. Every business should know how they will manage an emergency situation. Planning is best done before an event, not in the middle of it. Time spent planning is never wasted. How quickly your company gets back to business after an emergency often depends on the planning you do now.
BCP Is.. : STOP! Do not do anything, Just do BCP, actually no, this is not a case. BCP is not a hectic or difficult job, it depends how much organization love their Business and understand the value of impact after any disaster. What happen if BCP not in place and disaster comes?
BCP only needs dedication, commitment and support by the top Management.
((A business continuity plan is a "Set of documents, instructions, and procedures which enable a business to respond to accidents, disasters, emergencies, and/or threats without any stoppage or hindrance in its key operations. It also called business resumption plan, disaster recovery plan, or recovery plan." ))
Notable issue: Testing of BCP, one another issue which shows the organization seriousness regarding the successful implementation of Business continue plan. It is very important that thoroughly test the BCP process before an incident occurs. Without thorough testing, organization cannot be confident that the measures have in place will be effective in responding to disaster incidents.
If the organization do not test and measure the effectiveness of BCP is almost equals that the BCP process is not in place in the organization.
End Note: Regardless of the motivation for instituting a system of business continuity planning, the important point is that businesses of all sizes should take this seriously if they want to survive and prosper in the long term. Organization may choose to take on a task by self, or may engage the services of an external company to provide expert advice.
Whichever route organizations do choose, do so now because you never know when you may need to invoke your Business Continuity Plan.
